TALK WITH JOHN KEELING FROM FULLER'S BREWERY | EDGE BREWING, C / LLULL, 62, BCN

Photo © Øhm Sweet Øhm

Photo © Øhm Sweet Øhm

ENGLISH BELOW

IN ENGLISH:

When listening to individuals from the beer industry with the experience and expertise like John Keeling is when you realize that in the end one of the keys to success in any profession is converting something difficult into something easy. Although this might seem simple in theory it definitely is not in practice.

Thanks to the Edge Brewing team we had yesterday the opportunity to get to know the former Brewery Manager (a position that he held for decades) and current Global Brand Ambassador of the historic Chiswick Brewery Fuller Smith & Turner (better known as Fuller’s) and try some of their beers provided by the importers and distributors Condal Chef.

The talk also had a high-class moderator, Joan Villar-i-Martí, aka "Birraire", whose experience, rigor and extensive knowledge of the product and the sector allowed Mr. Keeling to intervene in an orderly and dynamic manner with interesting themes as the functions of a Head Brewer, the importance of transmitting the core values of your brand to both the marketing department and the consumers, what the change in the craft beer scene has meant for a city like London, the beer prices in the UK, the importance of the Cask Ale, the Fuller's & Friends collaborations project, the special Past Masters editions based on ancient recipes, their Vintage Ales, the mythical London Pride beer and the new trends that according to them are on their way, among others.

From all of Mr. Keeling’s statements I would like to highlight his tremendous capacity for focus and simplicity when referring to the challenge of adapting to the new times that embrace innovation but without renouncing tradition. As he states (an opinion that I fully share) one can be a fan of the Rolling Stones but he also has to know that there used to be a bluesman called Muddy Waters, and without the first, the second probably would not have existed.

Regarding his vision of the new craft beer wave, Mr. Keeling highlighted the fact that the consumer gives increasingly more value to taste and quality when he chooses a beer and the positive change that this has meant for the industry. He also talked about the value of being consistent, and the importance of developing a recognizable beer with its own personality in the market.

Because in the end, following the words of Mr. Keeling, the secret to position yourself and get to know the client is to drink in the pubs where he drinks, see what he likes and participate in the cultural richness that surrounds the beer. And with all this knowledge, try to make the best beer possible every day.

MASH BEER FEST 2018 AT NAU BOSTIK | C / FERRAN TURNÉ, 11, BCN

ENGLISH BELOW

IN ENGLISH:

There are three words that came to my mind when I stopped to reflect on all what I experienced during the second edition of MASH BEER FEST: "Veni, vidi, vici”: I came, I saw, I conquered.

But unlike the Latin phrase by the Roman military general I am not referring to a war, but rather how MASH has conquered the city and our hearts and become the festival that many a craft beer lover has only dreamed of.

Imagine for a moment the feeling of a child who enters a candy store for the first time. Now, take that child and replace it with a group of adults who are craft beer fans and the candy store for a space that during two intense days gathers some of the best breweries in the national and international craft beer scene. That is what the emotion is all about. That is MASH.

In fact I am convinced that more than one person still has red marks from pinching himself while walking through the Nau Bostik halls and discovering all the beers that were within reach with a simple exchange of tokens. Because the immense quality and the state of conservation of what we have tried during the MASH my dear friends, is almost scandalous.

The expectations were very high, and the profile of the attendees raised them even more, considering what a festival with these characteristics entails. But I can assure you that the feeling conveyed by all the professionals, connoisseurs and/or beer fans with whom I was lucky enough to coincide at the event and share the experience, was pure and overflowing enthusiasm for what they were tasting. Something that was unthinkable to see in Barcelona just a few years ago, and that thanks to the work and passion of many has become a reality.

That said: if you want to know more about this year's edition you can go HERE. Most of all I want to congratulate the organizers of the event: the Catalan breweries Edge Brewing and Garage Beer Co., and the US distributor Shelton Brothers Inc. for the great success of the festival, and thank them for all the affection and effort that has allowed them to give shape to a dream festival. And now we are impatiently waiting for the announcement of the date for the third edition to mark it down in the agenda!

CANTILLON ZWANZE DAY 2018 AT MASIA AGULLONS | SANT JOAN DE MEDIONA (ALT PENEDÈS)

zwanzeday.jpg

ENGLISH VERSION BELOW

The celebration of the annual Zwanze Day event that took place on Saturday, September 29, was quite special to me personally. Mainly for two reasons: It was my first visit to the location where ALES Agullons brews its beers, something that I had on my bucket list since quite some time, and being lucky enough to go the same day that the mythical Brasserie Cantillon offered an experimental beer made for the occasion and only tapped it for a select group of beer hot spots around the world, in addition to an excellent repertoire of barrels and bottles of their brews.

The Zwanze beer of this year, Maneken Pise, was a blend of lambic aged during two years in Amarone, Chianti and Sangiovese barrels giving it a smooth and elegant fruity character, slightly vinous, with wood notes. Fascinating and delectable.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Carlos and Montse of ALES Agullons, the organizers and collaborators for making the event possible, to the Edge Brewing team for the organization of the trip allowing us to participate without worrying about driving there, and all those beer enthusiasts who went to Masia Agullons de Sant Joan de Mediona to share a fantastic day full of great beers, music and good atmosphere.

MEET THE BREWER WITH JUSTIN HAWKE FROM MOOR BEER CO. | BODEGA FERMIN. SANT CARLES, 18, BCN

Photo © Barcelona Food Experience

Photo © Barcelona Food Experience

We had a good opportunity to have a quick chat with Justin Hawke, owner and head brewer at Moor Beer Co. in Bristol, at the Meet the Brewer organized by Bodega Fermin.

Justin explained us his brewing philosophy, a combination of British, American and German traditions. With a focus on drinkability, Moor beers are hoppy but without losing balance and flavor.

They are characterized by using floor malted barley - the traditional way of producing malt for brewing before the Industrial Revolution -, and hops from Southern and Northern Hemisphere plus some British and Europeans too. His love for real ale has led to them opting for traditional British secondary re-fermentation and this is why their cans are conditioned with live yeast.

So probably, after hearing this, we only have one choice: drink moor!

BEER RELEASE: BRIGHT | GARAGE BEER CO. SANT ANDREU. SANT ADRIÀ, 66, BCN

Photo © Øhm Sweet Øhm

The guys from Garage Beer Co. definitely know how to organize an event.

On this occasion the celebration was more than justified: the release of their new India Pale Ale, BRIGHT (with Chinook, Palisade, Simcoe and Mosaic hops, and BRY-97 yeasts making the magic happen), just to remind everyone that they -also- know how to rule outside the trend of Hazy IPAs.

The place was packed, blues music throbbing through the air, and the delicious smell of meat from the Chivuo's grills contributed to improve the festive atmosphere and satisfy the stomachs of those who decided to face the winter cold and go to Sant Andreu.

Furthermore, is there something better than tasting a fresh batch of beer surrounded by fermenters, wood barrels and sacks of malt? I don’t think so...

Fantastic tasting with Cerveses La Pirata at La Rovira.

Cerveses La Pirata is located in Súria (Barcelona) and in a few years it has deservedly become one of the most respected and awarded Spanish breweries.

The tasting was guided by one of their crew members, Josep Ramiro and after a quick introduction to their history he presented four of their brews: Panòptic (New England IPA); Liquid fear (Double IPA); Jam Session (Saison in collab w/ Buddelship Brauerei aged in Chardonnay barrels); and Black Block (Russian Imperial Stout aged in Bourbon barrels). Reaaaally good stuff.

Many thanks to La Rovira too for organizing the event and for bringing beer culture to the neighbourhood!

Such a great party at Hopposite BCN! Cool atmosphere and music, fantastic beers on tap and delicious pizzas!

I declare myself a huge fan of Nómada Brewing. I love their concept, their respect for beer, and the team that makes it possible.

My highlight of the night was without any doubt their new brew: Nature Pils. Czech malt and yeast and German hops, to create a balanced, exceptionally full-bodied and easy to drink Pilsner. Bread and flowers.

Many thanks Sami Claret for your explanations about the brewing process and your kindness, it was truly delicious. We all love IPAs or weird barrel-aged options, but for beer drinkers who keep sampling new flavors it is always a big pleasure to get into drinkability and devour a well-made super subtle beer like Nature Pils.
